THE SENIOR STEPS

This is it: your last year of high school. That means that this is the last year that you have to get everything in order before you head off to college. Here are some things that you want to remember to accomplish this year.

FALL

• Meet with your guidance counselor. This is more important than ever. They can help you every step of the way. Make sure that you are meeting all of the requirements for graduation and acceptance to the colleges you are considering.
  
  
  
  
• Sign up for the ACT if you did not take it as a junior, or if you are not satisfied with your score. Some schools have a minimum ACT score as a requirement for acceptance.
  
  
  
  
• Keep up those grades! Now is no time to start slacking off. Colleges will look at your senior year grades. Go out proud!
  
  
  
  
• Start applying to the schools that you are considering. Make sure to take your time during the application process. Avoid the small, silly errors. Also, many schools require an application fee. Check with your guidance counselor to see if you qualify for a fee waiver.
  
  
  
  
• Think about the people you want to ask for letters of recommendation. Think about teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, and employers. Make sure you ask them with at least a two week notice. Remember-be very grateful for their help!
  
  
  
  
• Start looking into financial aid. There are both local and national scholarships. You need to apply for as many scholarships as you possibly can. They aren’t always easy to come by. Start the investigation now! Remember- you are not alone. Your guidance counselor can be of great assistance during this process.
  
  
  
  
• Update your resume. Make sure you really make yourself shine on paper.
  
  
  
  
• Continue your college search! You may still not be decided on what college you want to go to. Continue to do  your research and start narrowing down your options.
  
  
  
  

WINTER

• Fill out your FAFSA. (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). You can do this as early as January 1st. You want to do it as soon as possible. The first priority deadline is February 15th. Remember-there are many resources where you can get help filling out the FAFSA if you need it. Talk to your guidance counselor if you have concerns.
  
  
  
  
• Keep track of deadlines! Many scholarship deadlines will be creeping up on you soon. Make sure you don’t miss out on applying to scholarships or applying to your favorite school.
  
  
  
  
• Keep your eye out for your SARS report. It should arrive 4 weeks after you file your FAFSA.
  
  
  
  
• Compare financial aid packages from the different schools that you are considering. This can help you determine what school you want to attend.
  
  
  
  
• Make the final decision! Notify the schools that you applied for but are not going to attend of your decision. Make sure your final transcript is sent in to the school of your choice.
